PCOMP | Project1- Listen to the painting

Updated: Oct 7, 2020

[Overview]

I worked with Jingyao on the two-weeks instrument project. It was really nice to work with Jingyao. At the beginning, we struggled with our concept for a long time since we wanted to do something really cool and brand new.

After talking with Tom, we were suggested to start simple. So we start with the "Air harp" idea. Tom also pointed that "Instead of creating brand new stuff, there is another way to be creative: give unexpected functions to the existing items. Let people expect low but see surprising result. " We kept this in our mind, and decided to combine the "Air harp" idea with "drawing board". When people draw on the canvas, the device converts their drawing action to music. It kind of like transferring between visual and sound expression. We were both really satisfied with the idea!

The office hour is helpful. And I find two thing is important:

  1. Start simple, great ideas will come when you gradually develop it.

  2. A way to think: give the existing item a new expression.

Things I learned from Jingyao:

  1. Jingyao showed me many cool example of PCOMP Projects. These are really inspiring. I become more familiar with doing PCOMP research.

  2. She is really patient when we meet bugs and calmly doing search and read the resources.

Instead of mapping the data, we decide to compare the original number and live number. Therefore we do not have to change the settings in different lighting environment.
